When the Kids Go Away, Mechanical Contractors Come to Play

February 11, 2020

How do you upgrade the Building Automation Systems for three schools totaling 296,000 square feet while the students and faculty are away on summer vacation?

To start, you should ask Greensboro, N.C. based mechanical and building automation contractor, Systems Contractors Incorporated.

In the summer of 2019, Moore County Public Schools tapped their preferred partner to upgrade the dated Building Automation Systems, curb energy consumption, and provide a more comfortable learning environment for students and faculty alike.

“There was just one big challenge,” said SCI’s Marshall See, Director of Building Solutions. “Three different schools needed to be upgraded in a matter of 5 weeks. It’s important to note the upgrade required all of the original building automation components to be removed, all of the new sensors and panels be installed, wired, point to point checked out, programmed and commissioned.”

On top of this feat, the three schools were in the midst of flooring upgrades, painting, and the hosting of summer camps for children.

“I could not be more proud of how our teams partnered with Moore County staff to make this happen and meet the deadlines,” said See.

SCI embarked on the project just after the Fourth of July holiday. This included the installation of new Trane Synchrony Systems and the support of secure connections using the Trane Connect platform. The building automation team at Systems Contractors Inc. took the responsibility of cyber security extremely serious and worked with the school system to ensure all products installed were secure and up to date. They also provided Moore County Public Schools with a web based system that can be accessed from any web browser. This upgrade path was chosen to expand the campus system and compliment other Trane Systems the county utilizes.

“Systems Contractors provided us with a 30 to 35 percent fuel savings by changing the programs for boilers,” said Moore County Schools Energy Manager, Anthony McNeill. “We have found the professionals at SCI to be among the most hard working guys in their respective industry.”
